I remember watching that movie, "Hope and Glory," (or should it be Hope and Glory? I never know) when I was a kid, and there was this scene where the dad (who in my head but not in reality is the same guy who played the dad in "A Christmas Story" with the leg-shaped lamp) brings home this huge coffee-can-sized tin of jam. The mom does not want to eat it because she thinks it might have been poisoned by the Germans. Everyone else wants to eat it because they really miss jam. In the end, of course, the latter wins, and everyone digs in with spoons and they all have a crazy jam-eating festival in their dining room. I remember thinking to myself,
"WOW. English people must really like jam."
