There's a reason why I loved being a stage manager in high school theater. I really get a lot of enjoyment out of being the guy that people know they can turn to whenever they have a problem that needs solving. That's why one of mmy favorite memories was sprinting the length of my school to grab a pair of replacement trousers when someone spilled spirit gum on an actor during a costume change, and made it back just in time to make him decent and shove him on stage. It's why I don't honestly mind being the guy who has to set up 1 am conference calls with India to negotiate two weeks' worth of changes one week before the release of the next version of our software. Hell, even going in on the weekend is fine, because I know that I'm doing what other people don't, or can't, do. Dorky as it is, my quote in my senior yearbook was Captain Picard of the good ol' U.S.S. Enterprise, advising a member of his crew: "Mr. Data, things are only impossible...until they're not."
It's a maxim that has served me very well in life, and led to me doing any number of impossible things. Still, I need to learn to recognize that there are a few things beyond my reach, and I would appreciate it if my friends would let me know when I'm going too far. For example, it would have been nice if someone had told me that I can't reasonably expect to drink three cans of Sparks just before bedtime and still lay peacefully in bed without twitching.
